Cake smashes are one of my favourite types of shoots! These sessions usually combine my love of photography and setting up custom backdrops with my other love of baking. I have to say I was even more excited for Nash's smash because his Momma asked if we could do a Donut Smash and I have wanted to do one of these for a while now.

Celebrating a 1st Birthday is such a special milestone, so I try to make each set up memorable and unique. The process begins with a discussion and questionnaire to help me understand each client's vision and what they are imagining for their little one's photo shoot. When we first starting planning this session Mom had seen a few images on Pinterest that caught her eye that she shared, which I think helps to generate some ideas. She was worried that Pinterest might be a photographers worst nightmare, but I assured her that it was a great starting point and helps me understand what she likes. From Mom's ideas and photos I designed an exclusive set up just for Nash!

Before we brought the donuts out I snapped a few photos of Birthday Boy. He was a little shy at first but opened up as soon as he realized he could play with the balloons in the set up! Once he was comfortable it was time for the main show: THE DONUT SMASH! In the past I have had little ones that weren't sure about the cake and needed some encouragement but Nash dug in almost immediately. He was quick to taste the donuts, and had some pretty hilarious reactions to the taste! Once the donuts came out we only had about 10 minutes until they were no longer interesting or fun. Luckily, I had lots of great photo opportunities in the short window.
To finish off the session I got to use my new little tub for the very first time! I went back and forth so many times when trying to decide if I should buy the tub, and I am SOOO happy I decided to stop thinking about it and just do it. The tub is the perfect size for a one year old and Nash had so much time splashing around. I absolutely adore how these images turned out and cannot wait to use the tub again.
Happy Birthday Nash! It was an absolute pleasure helping you capture these memories of your 1st Birthday!
